This internationally acclaimed production takes everything us parents and grandparents loved about the circus as kids and gives it one seriously impressive modern upgrade. After sell-out seasons around Australia, its big, all-star cast is heading to The Art House Wyong for one night only these school holidays – and they certainly don't hold back on the spectacle.

Aerialists soar above the stage. Fire jugglers send flames flying. Acrobats flip and tumble, performers balance precariously on chairs stacked three high and Cyr wheel artists spin around the stage inside enormous metal hoops. Throw in dancers, fireworks and that LED lightsaber battle and there are moments when you won't know where to look.

This is circus turned all the way up

There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about taking your kids to the circus. The juggling, the slapstick, the daring tricks and that anticipation of wondering what’s coming next.

Cirque Nouvelle keeps all of that, then asks: what does circus look like now?

At the centre of the show is a wonderfully old-school ringmaster who's informed that his beloved circus requires an “update”. He's not exactly thrilled about it.

What follows is a battle between old and new, as the traditional showmanship of circus collides with technology, theatrical lighting, dance and a new generation of seriously impressive performers.

And there's a LOT happening on that stage. Beyond the fire, fireworks and aerial acts, expect hula hoops, hand balancing, contortion, unicycling, team juggling and extreme balancing acts. Reviews from previous performances have even reported knife juggling atop a seven-foot unicycle and flame swallowing. This is a cast with a seriously impressive bag of tricks.

It all unfolds as a slick 75-minute theatre production, with music, lighting, costumes and dancers woven between the individual circus acts so the action keeps moving. It's circus as we remember it – just bigger, bolder and with a whole lot more technology thrown at it.

And that's really the fun of Cirque Nouvelle. Parents and grandparents get a lovely hit of circus nostalgia, while the kids get to see just how wild circus has become.
