The Smeds and The Smoos at The Art House

Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s award-winning children’s picture book The Smeds and The Smoos has been adapted into a stage show, and it’s playing at The Art House this February.

First developed in London and now hitting Australia’s shores for the first time, The Smeds and The Smoos tells the story of two rival groups of aliens living on a far-off planet. When a young Smed and Smoo fall in love and zoom off into space together, their families need to work together and embark on a galactic mission to get them back.

Fans of stage shows The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom will delight in this latest show from CDP and Tall Stories, who have become incredibly good at taking our favourite five-minute bedtime stories and stretching them into live plays.

In The Smeds and The Smoos, audiences are kept well engaged by their inclusion of music, songs, puppetry and the many pantomime moments where kids are encouraged to point, laugh and offer direction. The props are basic, big and bright, and the use of narrators is a nice nod to the show’s beginnings as a bedtime story.

Know the book or seen the ABC kids animation? You’ll love it! Don’t know the book? We’re confident you’ll love it too.

Dog Man: The Musical at The Art House

If you have a kid in primary school, we bet your bottom dollar they’re familiar with Captain Underpants and Dog Man. Both are characters created by children’s author/illustrator Dav Pilkey for his award-winning series of the same names. And now Dog Man is leaping from the page and onto the stage in this musical adaptation of his series.

The premise is funny and ridiculous… Dog Man has the head of a dog and the body of a policeman! He loves to fight crime, chew the furniture and fight Petey – the world’s most evil cat. Can he save the city from Flippy the cyborg fish and his army of Beasty Buildings? You best get tickets to find out!

Like the books, this show is wacky, silly, bold and fun. It’s creative and imaginative and completely aligned with primary school humour. Grab yourself a seat and get ready for a laugh.
