1984 by George Orwell is performing at Laycock this June and it’s uncomfortable, visceral, thought-provoking theatre that you can’t look away from!
Yep, this is theatre that makes you stop, stare and reflect. It’s not fun or vibrant, nor uplifting, nor hopeful. It is – just like the classic upon which it’s based – raw. And deep. And utterly brilliant.
It’s a masterwork that everyone should read and see, and it’s performing at Laycock Street Community Theatre this June – perfect for your high school student as it is listed on the HSC English curriculum. We recommend you snap up tickets before it sells out.
PS. There will be an evening performance and a mid-week day-time performance for high-school students. For school group bookings please contact the Box Office on 4323 3233 between 10am – 2pm Mon, Tue, Wed & Fri or email them on [email protected]

Set in the totalitarian state of Oceania, where war is eternal and the Thought Police lurk in every shadow, 1984 by George Orwell is a Shake & Stir Theatre Co play based on Orwell’s revered dystopian novel. The plot follows Winston Smith, a Ministry of Truth editor who is assigned the task of rewriting history to fit the government’s ever-changing narrative. Winston defies Big Brother when he falls for Julia, a hopeful, cunning and rebellious party follower, and their love ultimately leads to their downfall.
Orwell penned his chilling novel in 1948, and 77 years on, the themes he raised remain disturbingly prescient. If you’re looking for a conversation starter between yourself and your teens, get them to Laycock to see this. It’s sure to rattle their thinking and ignite some interesting discussions. Teachers, if 1984 is on your syllabus list, be sure to take your students to see this. You can be sure that the towering stage projections, harrowing music and performances from the talented cast will stick with your students far beyond the written word.
If you’ve read the novel (and if you haven’t, you really should), value free speech, or have a love of dystopian fiction, you will be deeply moved by this play and the chance it brings to think about social justice, human rights and politics.
