Love interactive theatre and the old-school fun and nostalgia of a puppet show? Us too! So we’re excited to share that A Little Bit of Blue is being performed at Laycock Street Community Theatre this June.

Created and performed by Little Wing Puppets, an Australian puppetry company specialising in children’s theatre, A Little Bit of Blue is an interactive detective show for kids aged 3 to 10.

This isn’t a show where kids have to sit still and be quiet – far from it. Instead, the audience is invited to get involved, to call out and to help solve a mystery.

Mrs. Mavis Hooley, a bespectacled puppet with fluffy brown slippers, is finding that little things keep going missing: clothes pegs; a teacup; a ball of wool. Mavis calls in a detective to investigate and the detective finds something peculiar. Can the audience help the detective solve the mystery? And who is that blue bird in the superhero mask?

Jenny Ellis, a puppeteer of more than twenty years, weaves this gorgeous story together – sometimes playing three characters at once – and the outcome is a fun mix of detective noir, slapstick and education on the Satin Bowerbird and its fascination with the colour blue.

This show is just 40 minutes long, so it’s a perfect introduction for young children to the theatre and even for older kids who don’t like to sit still for too long.

A Little Bit of Blue‘s Puppetry of Paper workshop

Does your child love to dabble in craft and performance? Have them join in the show’s accompanying 60-minute Little Wing Puppets – Puppetry of Paper workshop. Here, children are invited to make a unique puppet out of paper. There are no rules – they can crunch, rip, twist and tear – before learning techniques to bring their puppet to life.

This workshop is based on Bunraku-style puppetry (a traditional Japanese form of theatre that involves multiple puppeteers working closely together to operate one puppet), so the children will work as individuals or as a team. At the end of the workshop, the children will have the opportunity to present a few short performances to the group.
