Did you know there are more than 10,000 children on the Coast that live below the poverty line? And the cost of living crisis is making life even tougher for these families.
Local children’s charity We Care Connect is on a mission to support these children by providing them with pre-loved clothing, cots, prams and car seats. On average their volunteers pack and prepare bundles for 250 children each month – but as Winter hits, they are asked to support even more children… and this May more than 500 children have needed everyday essentials like clothing, nappies, blankets and linen.
We Care Connect is introducing a new campaign – the idea is a school ‘Reverse Mufti Day’, so a mufti day with a difference, where school kids (and teachers!) dress ‘Back to front’ to give back to local kids in need. Why reverse or back to front? For disadvantaged children, mufti days may not bring the smiles they’re intended to. We hate to imagine that a child’s only clothing is their school uniform, and a mufti day is another reminder that they don’t have the same things their friends do.
Helen Barker from the We Care team says “We’d love to see as many Central Coast schools as possible get involved with the Reverse Mufti Day. As well as a fundraiser for We Care Connect’s programs, we hope schools can use it as a way to raise awareness of the hidden poverty that sadly exists here on the Coast. The cost of living crisis is affecting families who were already in tough situations. Through our partnerships with local welfare agencies, we are hearing way too many examples of children having to go without essentials, or needing extra layers to keep them warm as Winter hits and they can’t afford heating due to expensive utility bills. The Reverse Mufti Day is a way that your school can show “we care” for all these kids”.
