Spring is just around the corner, and some wonderful shows and events have been announced across the Central Coast, Sydney and Newcastle region. We’ve done all the google searching for you and have found the best of the bunch in bringing you this top 10 list. Some of them are local and some make for a fun day-trip.

These events are all sure to entertain your tribe – and you – so quick-sticks, grab your tickets before we tell everyone else. We’ve revealed this list to you, our special subscribers, first… but we can’t keep them a secret for long.

1. The Gruffalo

“A mouse took a stroll through the deep, dark wood…” This magical, musical adaptation of the classic picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler is sure to be loads of fun.

Join Mouse on a daring adventure through the deep, dark wood. As he searches for hazelnuts, Mouse meets the cunning Fox, the eccentric old Owl and the party mad Snake. Will the story of the terrifying Gruffalo save Mouse from ending up as dinner for these hungry woodland creatures? After all, there’s no such thing as a Gruffalo – or is there?

When: 9-10 November (multiple shows each day).

2. Sleeping Beauty by The Australian Ballet

Once Upon a Time: The Sleeping Beauty is a magical experience that will make you gasp, dream and laugh. This special one-hour version of David McAllister’s The Sleeping Beauty is performed with a full orchestra and narrated by one of the central characters, Catalabutte. With a run-time of approximately 60-minutes, and perfect for children aged three and above, it’s fun, interactive and will have the little ones twirling for joy.

Fairies, a villain and a sleeping princess … Once Upon a Time: The Sleeping Beauty has all the magic and wonder of the full-length production in a child-friendly format.

When: 15 November at 12:30pm.

 3. Toruk by Cirque du Soleil

Inspired by James Cameron’s Avatar, Cirque du Soleil transports you to the world of Pandora in a visually stunning live setting. Experience a storytelling odyssey through a new world of imagination, discovery and possibility.

If you’ve never seen the spectacle of a Cirque du Soleil it really is worth investing in – think of it as a circus on steroids. The costumes and staging are staggeringly beautiful and detailed, and the performers are exceptionally talented.

When: From 21-28 October (multiple shows a day).
Location: Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney.

4. The Wiggles Christmas Show
The Wiggles Wiggly Christmas Big Show! will feature all your favourite Wiggles songs such as “Do the Propeller” and “Rock A Bye Your Bear”, as well as Christmas hits such as “Go Santa Go!”

Emma, Anthony, Lachy and Simon will be there, Santa and his dancing reindeer promise to stop by, and this year they’re forecasting snow too!

When: There are multiple seats still available for the Saturday 23 December show at Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney. There are only single tickets left to the Darling Harbour show on 10 December and The Newcastle Entertainment Centre on 19 December, but you can have children under 12 months sitting on your knee free of charge. Disclaimer: yes, we know this is on in Summer not Spring, but these tickets will sell out quickly so we thought we best share now.

5. Frank Woodley, Noodlenut

Prepare yourself for absolute nonsense and silly shenanigans in Frank Woodley’s first comedy show created especially for kids!

Hot on the heels of international and local stage successes, this veteran comedy master will have your little noodles rolling around in the aisles as he sings songs about sneezing, creates chaotic magic and impersonates animals playing sport.

Recommended for children 6+.

When: From 25 September – 8 October (multiple shows a day).

 6 Kids High Tea at Crowne Plaza Terrigal

Ahoy there mi hearties, tickets to Crowne Plaza Terrigal’s September Kids High Tea are now on sale. “Pirates and princesses” is the theme this time and dressing up is encouraged, so we’re betting there’ll be lots of Captain Featherswords and Elsas in attendance. A puppet show will hit the stage as the main entertainment, plus there will be face painting, balloon sculpting, and plaster decorating. And, of course, a high tea lunch fit for a princess.

7 Erth’s Prehistoric Aquarium, The Opera House

Adventure to the bottom of the sea and unlock some of nature’s greatest mysteries in this interactive theatrical experience. Deep below the surface, submerged below time, swim some of the world’s most amazing prehistoric marine reptiles. Kids will get up close and personal with an array of lifelike puppets of aquatic creatures and critters from bygone eras in this fun and educational performance that connects young audiences to the science of palaeontology.

Appropriate for children 5+.

When: From 23 September – 8 October (multiple shows a day).

8 Grug and The Rainbow

Ted Prior’s beloved picture books come to life in this stunning production from Windmill Theatre Co.

Grug began his life as the grassy top of a Burrawang tree. Embarking on his own epic journey to find a rainbow, it always seems just beyond his grasp. But Grug is full of determination and his adventures are always full of surprises.

Featuring exquisite puppetry and more of the gentle storytelling that has delighted audiences around the world, this new show has been specially created for the next generation of our littlest theatregoers.

The perfect show for babies and children aged 1+.

When: From 7-9 September (multiple shows a day).

9 DinoSnore – Sleepovers at the Australian Museum

Spend a night at the Museum! Get up close and personal with dinos, fossils and spiders, oh my! After a buffet dinner, enjoy getting up close to native Australian animals such as crocodiles, pythons and lizards, before coming face-to-face with the museum’s resident Muttaburrasaurus, an Australian dinosaur that lived around 100 million years ago!

Travel back to Australia’s ancient past and hold real fossils. Embark on a tour by torchlight to discover The Australian Museum’s treasures and stories before relaxing in the theatre to watch the film “Night at the Museum”. The evening is topped off by sleeping next to some old dinosaur favourites including Stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus Rex. In the morning you will wake to breakfast at our rooftop cafe overlooking Sydney Harbour and Botanic Gardens followed by an exclusive viewing of our current special exhibition.

Appropriate for children 6-14 years.

When: 29 September (6pm-8am the following morning).
Location: Australian Museum, Sydney.

10 Wyong Musical Theatre Company presents Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Originally written for his son, Ian Fleming’s book became the much loved 1968 film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. A sensational score by the renowned Sherman Brothers (Richard and Robert) includes such unforgettable songs as “Truly Scrumptious”, “Toot Sweets”, “Hushabye Mountain”, and, of course its Oscar-nominated title song, “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”.

Reaching a new generation through an enthralling and enchanting stage musical, CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG details the fantastic adventures of the out-of-the-ordinary magical car that flies through the air and sails the seas, the eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts and his two children Jemima and Jeremy, alongside Truly Scrumptious and Grandpa Potts, who are all trying to outwit the dastardly Baron Bomburst and the evil Child Catcher.

When: 22-30 September (multiple shows each day).
