Did you know that owls aren’t born wise? Like most of us, they have to learn it.
In The Owl’s Apprentice, we meet Poot Poot, a young owl who’s been sent to Owl School to learn the secrets of wisdom. Trouble is, Poot Poot isn’t like the other owls – he misses home, he misses his family, and he’s not quite sure what “wisdom” even is.
What follows is a heartwarming, funny and beautifully nostalgic tale told through shadow puppetry, hand puppetry and captivating storytelling – all brought to life by the wonderfully talented Jenny Ellis. Jenny has been a puppeteer for more than 20 years and, in this show, she plays multiple characters, weaves the whole story together and keeps her audience – young and old – utterly enchanted.
Along his journey, Poot Poot meets a whole cast of wise Australian animals: A wombat who teaches him persistence. A lyrebird who shows him the value of careful listening. A kookaburra who helps him find joy even when he’s sad. An echidna who shares the importance of resilience. And a platypus who teaches him to embrace being different.
Through these encounters, Poot Poot discovers that wisdom isn’t just one thing – it’s the collection of little lessons you learn each and every day.
The Owl’s Apprentice was created by Little Wing Puppets, an Australian company specialising in imaginative, high-quality children’s theatre, and it’s a beautiful show for your little ones.
Bonus: There are Shadow Puppet-Making Workshops, too!
As if the show itself wasn’t magical enough, Jenny is also offering hands-on shadow puppet-making workshops for kids aged 4-12. In these workshops, children will learn the skills to create their own puppet characters and stories – and they’ll take their very own puppet home! The workshops are a perfect creative add-on, inspiring little ones to keep the magic alive long after the curtain falls.
Whether you come for the show, the workshop, or both, The Owl’s Apprentice promises to be an enchanting, wisdom-filled adventure your kids will be talking about for days.
