Coming to the Art House Wyong this March is the riveting contemporary dance performance “SILENCE”.

Beating drums, evocative lighting, and seven powerful dancers unite on a stage slowly engulfed in dirt to start a conversation for the return of Indigenous lands. SILENCE acts as an entry point for our young adults to explore First Nations rights and history, so it’s a show to see with your older kids and aspiring dancers 12+.

“SILENCE” Performance

The soundtrack was electrifying and the performance so powerful and riveting, that I had to remind myself to breathe.”

Brought to you by Blakdance, the national industry organisation for First Nation contemporary dancers and choreographers, SILENCE is about the space in between. It’s about the conversations not being heard and the responses that are muted. Through the beating of a drum, bodies thrash through frequencies to uncover what lies in the SILENCE.

There’s SILENCE between the stars as the Emu travels across the night sky. There’s SILENCE in the dancer’s energy when they hit the cut, the rupture between rhythms and movement enabling a vibrational glitch where the spirit world can enter. It’s also the deafening SILENCE under white noise. The same questions echoed through generations.

“With symbolism heavily steeped in land rights and Treaty, the show explores what a 250+ year-long denial of meaningful listening to First Nations people has done to the psyche of the people and land. Brown feet kick up sand, earth, dirt, and dust. The sand seeps through brown fingers as it always has. Always was, always will be”.

Ellen van Neerven

Lighting, live percussion, and impressive choreography come together to give voice to the struggles and freedoms of First Nations people. This is a wonderful way to engage your curious teens in conversation.

SILENCE breaks the SILENCE.
