Kids absolutely love seeing their favourite characters and stories brought to life on stage or existing somewhere else besides the pages of a book. Here are five awesome kids shows to get to with your little bookworms in 2020 and 2021.


1. The Owl and the Pussycat

Children, parents, carers and teachers will be stoked that they get to join in this nostalgic musical  journey – all taking place aboard a giant, magical pea green boat! Sail across the sea with The Owl and the Pussycat in this enchanting theatrical experience for families, based on Edward Lear’s famous childhood poem. This one promises stunning vocals, interactive theatre, puppetry and a troupe of musical Puffins!

Plus, kids can try out their Origami skills at a FREE boat-making workshop – just stay behind after the Friday 10am show or come early for the 12pm performance! 

On Thursday 8th July 2021 at 4pm, children are also invited to join in a special music workshop before the Thursday performance where they’ll have the opportunity to play percussion instruments and explore the show’s themes of harmony, adventure and acceptance.

2. The 91 Storey Treehouse

The 91 Storey Treehouse is a huge favourite with primary school-aged children, and this adaptation from the book by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton will have you and your kids laughing your socks off! Sit gripped to your seats as best friends Andy, Terry and Jill take on the biggest challenge of their lives – babysitting Mr Big Nose’s grandchildren! It’s a job that seems easy enough – that is until the kids decide they want to explore the incredible 91 Storey Treehouse! With a deserted desert island, a whirlpool, a giant spider and a mysterious red button that they can’t decide if they should push or not, this is one babysitting experience that is going to keep everyone on their toes!

3. Magic Beach

Based on the classic book by Alison Lester, this wonderful live performance will have you and your children transported on an enchanted adventure to Magic Beach – a holiday destination where everything you can imagine becomes real! Through text, song, light, shadow and movement this lovely tale celebrates the power of imagination and the differences that make each and every child special.

4. Edward the Emu

We love it when a children’s book has a great moral to the story and this stage production based on the popular picture books by Sheena Knowles and Rod Clement does just that! Follow Edward the Emu and his lady Edwina as they go in search of their identities, only to discover that the best thing you can be is – you! This touching tale of tenderness is guaranteed to warm the heart while inciting a ton of giggles too!

5. The Gruffalo’s Child

If your little ones loved “The Gruffalo”, they’ll be super excited to hear that the bestselling sequel, “The Gruffalo’s Child” will be coming to Sydney Opera House this autumn! When her father warns her not to go into the deep, dark wood, the Gruffalo’s child ignores him and sets off on an adventurous mission to find the Big Bad Mouse – the only thing her father is really afraid of! Based on the best-selling picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffer, this magical musical adaptation would make a great experience gift or Easter school holiday treat!
