Nothing speaks of summer school holidays more than ice-cream dripping down cones and splatting onto bare feet. If you’re looking to recreate this classic Aussie holiday vibe, head to Helado Espresso and Gelato Bar!

Located just a block from Ettalong Beach, this fun cafe and ice-cream bar is used to bare feet, sandy shorts, and wet hair coming through their doors, and they’ll be quick to serve you a super awesome sundae to boot.

And now that daylight savings has hit, Helado has extended its hours, so you can continue to enjoy sundaes, waffles, coffee and now burgers, into the twilight hours.

This is awesome news for families. Because not only is this a fantastic place for late-afternoon treats, but it’s also a top spot for dinner. And as they serve their menu all day (from 7am to 8.30pm, Friday to Sunday), it’s an awesome option for families who want to get out for an early feed or grab a bite on the way home from the beach.

The stuff that keeps them famous – ice-cream, gelato and sorbet for kids… and adults

Helado’s freezers are stacked with a rainbow of flavours from blood orange sorbet to peanut butter fudge gelato! There’s cookies ‘n’ cream ice-cream for those who like to play it safe or rosewater gelato for those who like something a little out of the box.

They also serve baby cones, which are perfect for tots at just $2. Helado’s been witness to many a local babe getting their first taste of gelato – eyes wide, mouth open, “more, more, more”.

Their sundaes and milkshakes are epic!

The staff at Helado also make sundaes and milkshakes that are both fabulously Insta-worthy and damn tasty.

It’s a rare child who can pass up the Topsy Turvey Sundae, which is made of vanilla, strawberry and rainbow gelato, lollies, cream, and sprinkle baby cones! Plus, newly upgraded this summer is the Pink Unicorn drink! What was formerly a warm drink fit for winter has morphed into summer deliciousness in the form of a milkshake with the works!

We can vouch for the deliciousness of their El Escobar sundae, which is a winner for sleep-deprived parents. It’s a wake up in the form of espresso, chocolate and vanilla gelato, crushed waffles, coffee beans, and homemade mocha sauce. And it comes with a double espresso!

Plus, they cater to pretty well everyone here, with vegan ice-cream, dairy-free sorbet, and even a healthy option for those starting a New Year’s-resolution health kick. The Yogi Berry Sundae is all yummy, healthy goodness: frozen yoghurt, mixed fresh berries, and a fresh berry coulis.

Waffles, Sundaes and Milkshakes! This is the place to come for a special treat!

As if gelato wasn’t enough, they also have waffles – with some exciting new flavours hitting the menu this summer.

The ‘Over the Rainbow’ waffle comes topped with fairy floss, rainbow gelato, M&Ms, melted caramilk, maple syrup and whipped cream! It’s perfect for sweet tooths and Insta-snappers.

The ‘Campfire’ is a favourite of ours with its caramelised banana, homemade butterscotch sauce, and toasted marshmallow. This one is a double waffle, so it’s a good one to share… though, we like keeping it all to ourselves.

They’re now open nights!

From Friday to Sunday they’re open nights with an awesome new menu full of fresh seasonal dishes perfect for summer: think Portuguese chicken burrito bowls, empanadas, sesame and ginger tofu bowls and a substantial selection of burgers – including vegetarian and vegan options.

Kids are well catered for with dining options that include fish and chips, mini cheeseburger sliders and the popular chicken schnitty. For those with a sweet-tooth, there’s also a kid’s waffle option ($8), a kid’s milkshake ($5) and their cute mini-sundae ($8).

Come for coffee and breakfast, too

Coffee is a specialty here, and you’ll likely find owner Chris on the Pablo & Rusty beans. They also have a selection of single-origin beans that change weekly – perfect if you like your coffee black.

You’re well looked after in Summer, too: as well as all your “normal” coffee types, you can opt for an iced coffee, affogato, or cold-brewed nitro coffee.

And while they’re best known for their sundaes and waffles, it’s not all about the sweet stuff. They also have a Mediterranean/Spanish breakfast menu that includes the likes of a mushroom and avo smash, a bagel Benny (smoked salmon, poached egg and Hollandaise), and vegan coconut bowl.

Meet Helado’s owners, Chantelle and Chris

Chantelle and Chris Perkins are the owners of Helado, and its opening a few years ago fulfils a life-long dream of Chantelle’s.

“My father was a well-known Chef and worked long hours,” Chantelle says, “so we would frequently visit him at his restaurant and we would try all the gelato and sorbet flavours they would make for each day. I grew up always saying, ‘One day, I’m going to have a Gelato Bar’. I didn’t want my teenagers thinking I wouldn’t do something I always dreamed of doing because it was risky. So I suppose that’s how Helado was born.”
